In this guide
The best bread knife for sourdough is a serrated knife with enough usable blade length to cross your loaf comfortably and a handle you can control. Compare the loaf, board space and slicing motion before choosing between a compact eight-inch blade and a longer nine- or ten-inch option.
A hard crust and an airy interior ask different things of the same cut: the edge must engage the outside while you avoid pressing the loaf flat. Serrations help, but length, technique and a properly cooled loaf matter too.
What to look for in a sourdough bread knife
| Check | Why it matters | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Usable blade length | You need room for a controlled back-and-forth stroke across the loaf. | Compare the loaf's width with the edge, leaving room for movement. |
| Serration pattern | The edge engages the crust differently from a plain edge. | Inspect the actual teeth or scallops rather than judging by the steel name. |
| Handle and heel clearance | Your hand needs room as the blade approaches the board. | Compare the blade-to-handle position and your preferred grip. |
| Board and counter space | A long blade needs space for the full stroke. | Check the knife's total length as well as blade length. |
| Care and storage | Serrations require a compatible maintenance method. | Check the care instructions and a protected storage space before buying. |
Eight, nine or ten inches: which length?
An eight-inch bread knife can be a useful option for smaller loaves, rolls and a compact setup. A nine-inch blade adds reach; a ten-inch blade is worth comparing for wider boules. There is no universal size that fits every loaf and every cook.
Measure the bread you actually buy or bake. If most of the edge disappears across the loaf's width, little remains for a comfortable stroke. Equally, extra length is less useful when the counter or board prevents you from moving it freely.
Blade length is only part of the fit. Compare the total knife length, handle comfort and room to finish the cut without your knuckles hitting the board. An offset handle is one possible design solution, but check the actual clearance of any model you consider.

Compare Dalstrong bread-knife options
| Model | Listed blade length | Reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| The Lord of the Rings™ Edition Bread Knife | 9 inches | A middle-length option with an ebony handle and themed blade artwork. |
| Gladiator Series Serrated Bread Knife | 10 inches | A longer classic option to compare with wider loaves and a larger board. |
| SUPERMAN™ Edition Bread Knife | 8 inches | A shorter alternative when you prefer a more compact blade and its themed design. |
These picks compare listed length, handle and design. They are not ranked by an independent cutting test. The right choice depends on your loaf and handling preferences; artwork does not establish better slicing performance.

Why serrations help with crusty bread
The points of a serrated edge can engage a firm crust while the slicing stroke carries the cut through the softer interior. A sharp straight-edged knife can cut some bread, but a serrated bread knife is a useful specialist for the contrast between crust and crumb.
Serrations vary in depth, spacing and shape. Do not infer how every serrated knife cuts from one photograph or a higher price. Compare the actual edge and your intended use. Shun's explanation of serration describes how this edge type engages resistant exteriors.
How to slice sourdough with more control
- Let a freshly baked loaf cool fully. Cutting while the crumb is still setting can produce a gummy-looking slice even with a suitable knife.
- Use a stable board. Give the loaf a secure resting position and leave space for the blade's stroke.
- Keep the supporting hand clear. Hold the loaf securely without placing fingers in the cutting path.
- Start with a light sawing motion. Let the edge engage the crust, then continue with controlled strokes rather than forcing the blade downward.
- Finish deliberately. Reduce pressure as the edge approaches the bottom crust and board.
If the loaf compresses before the crust cuts, check the edge condition, your downward pressure and whether the loaf has cooled. King Arthur Baking explains why bread should cool before slicing. A longer blade may help when reach is the problem, but it cannot fix every cause of a poor slice.
Care for the serrated edge
Hand wash and dry the knife, then store it with the edge protected. Avoid glass or stone cutting surfaces. Do not assume a sharpener made for straight edges is compatible with your serrations.
Follow the model's maintenance instructions. If a serrated edge needs restoration and you are unsure which tools fit its scallops and bevel, consult a suitable sharpening service. Our serrated-knife sharpening guide is a starting point; the exact blade's requirements still govern.
Bread-knife questions
Is a longer bread knife always better for sourdough?
No. Extra reach can help across a wide loaf, but you still need control, board space and storage. Choose enough length for the bread you usually slice.
Can a bread knife cut tomatoes or sandwiches?
Many serrated blades can handle these tasks. For small ingredients, compare whether a shorter serrated utility knife would be more comfortable.
Do I need an expensive bread knife for homemade bread?
Price alone does not establish the best fit. Compare usable length, edge design, grip and maintenance before paying for materials or decorative details.
Should I use a bread knife to carve a turkey?
For presentation slices of cooked turkey, compare a sharp straight-edged carving or slicing knife. Our carving vs slicing guide explains those choices.
